  32. GAMMA-RAY OBSERVATORY SET FOR SHIPMENT TO FLORIDA LAUNCH SITE

  34.      The Gamma-Ray Observatory (GRO), one of NASA'S Four Great 
  35. Observatories, will be shipped Feb. 6 by builder TRW from its 
  36. Redondo Beach, Calif., facility to Cape Canaveral Air Force 
  37. Station (CCAFS), Fla., in preparation for Space Shuttle launch 
  38. from Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Fla., in November 1990.

  40.      Following the Shuttle launch, GRO will be deployed into a 
  41. near-circular orbit 279 miles from Earth, where it will gather 
  42. gamma-ray data generated at the beginning of time -- perhaps 15 
  43. billion years ago -- in a comprehensive scientific effort to 
  44. learn more about the origin and fate of the universe.

  46.      After shipment by a flatbed trailer-equipped truck from 
  47. Redondo Beach to Los Angeles International Airport, the NASA 
  48. satellite will be airlifted to CCAFS for further testing and 
  49. eventual integration at KSC with Space Shuttle Atlantis.
  50.  
  51.      The GRO will be the heaviest spacecraft ever deployed from 
  52. the Space Shuttle, weighing nearly 17 tons.  It is among the 
  53. first spacecraft designed exclusively by computer techniques.  
  54. Its four scientific instruments are the largest, most advanced 
  55. and most sensitive of their type ever flown in space.  They are 
  56. designed to study gamma rays emitted by some of the most exotic 
  57. and explosive objects in the universe.  After an initial 2-year 
  58. mission, the GRO may continue to function for 8 years or longer. 
  59.  
  60.      Completing the complement of NASA's Four Great Observatories 
  61. are:  the Hubble Space Telescope, scheduled for Space Shuttle 
  62. Discovery launch from KSC April 18; the Advanced X-Ray 
  63. Astrophysics Facility; and the Space Infrared Telescope Facility, 
  64. the latter two planned for launch in the last half of the decade.

  84. Today the SYNCOM cradle will be transferred to its shipping  
  85. container and on second shift both the LSET and the SYNCOM    
  86. cradle shipping container will depart from the O&C.

  90. Closeout inspections were completed yesterday.  SC&DU move     
  91. and connection will continue today.  Also, BBXRT power on       
  92. stray voltage checks will be performed today.

  96. EPDB installations (3) were completed yesterday.  Fire    
  97. suppression bottle installation and test will continue       
  98. today.  ECS operations and hoist equipment proof loading
